A Tale of Two Threads — once upon a quilt…

In a quiet country studio in regional NSW, two threads come together — one of fabric, one of stitching — to tell a story. With care, patience and a little touch of magic, each quilt top is transformed into something lasting and love filled. Here, every stitch is part of a story waiting to be wrapped around family, shared with friends, and treasured for generations.

Understanding Your Quilting Options

Edge-to-Edge Quilting

Edge-to-edge (also called all-over quilting) is a continuous design stitched across the entire quilt from one side to the other. The pattern repeats evenly over the whole surface, creating beautiful texture and movement without focusing on individual blocks.

This option is cost-effective, efficient, and perfect for everyday quilts, gifts, and quilts with busy piecing where you want the quilting to complement rather than compete.

Custom Quilting

Custom quilting is more detailed and tailored specifically to your quilt’s layout. Different designs can be stitched in borders, blocks, sashing, or feature areas to highlight your piecing, applique or embroidery.

This option takes more time and planning but creates a truly unique, heirloom-quality finish.

Example:

Measure quilt in inches

A quilt measuring 60" × 70" is approximately 29 sq ft.
At $3.50 per square foot, the quilting cost would be about $102 for a light pattern chosen by the quilter.

Prices start at $ 3.50 a square foot for Edge to Edge

A minimum charge of $60 per quilt applies.

If you’re sending more than one quilt, each will be measured and priced individually (Discounts apply for bulk orders received at one time).

Thread

At Thread Tale Quilting, I use Superior Threads So Fine and Omni polyester threads, selected for their strength, consistency, and beautiful finish on my Gammill Statler.

A wide range of colours and styles is available. You’re welcome to let me know your preference, or I can carefully choose a thread that complements your quilt top once it arrives.

Thread colour can blend softly for a subtle look or gently contrast to highlight the quilting design and add texture. Polyester thread is strong, low-lint, and creates a clean, consistent stitch. It wears well with regular use and washing while remaining soft in your finished quilt.

Choose your quilting density and style

The variegated thread and density of the Blaze quilting pattern help to accentuate the patchwork and stabilize the small piecing without overpowering the pattern of this Bargello quilt.

I loved being able to use something different on this Motorcycle inspired Mid Century Modern quilt. Here I was able to use a larger quilting pattern and contrasting black thread on these 10-inch blocks. The large loose Flames quilting pattern make the solid colours come to life.

This Dachshund quilt really says it all when it comes to themed designs and you have to love the Hearts and Paws quilting pattern in soft grey thread. With lots of space for the pattern to run wild it never takes away from these gorgeous puppies.
